1. "It rains half the year here. Will these actually last, or just rust away?"
I hear this all the time. People see "rust" and think "rot." The reality is the opposite. Standard mild steel would rust through in our damp climate, but Corten is engineered differently. The rust you see is actually a protective oxide skin. Once that layer forms (usually after a few months of British rain), it seals the steel inside from oxygen and moisture. I’ve seen Corten walls installed in coastal gardens that are still standing strong 30 years later, while the timber sleepers next to them have turned to mush.
2. "I’ve just laid expensive Indian Sandstone. Will the runoff ruin my patio?"
This is a valid concern. During the "weathering phase" (the first 3–9 months), the steel will release carbon-rich runoff that can stain porous stone. Don’t install Corten directly onto paved surfaces. I always recommend a simple buffer: create a 50mm–100mm drainage strip filled with gravel or decorative pebbles between the wall and your patio. This captures the runoff and drains it away. If you do get a spot of staining, a bit of rust remover usually sorts it, but prevention is better than cure.
3. "I live in a mid-terrace. Can I get these panels through my house?"
Absolutely. This is the biggest advantage over concrete sleepers or blockwork. You don't need a crane or a wide side gate. The panels come in modular sections that two people can easily carry through a standard hallway or tight side alley. No mess, no wheelbarrows full of wet concrete, and no damaging your door frames.
4. "My garden is heavy clay and practically a bog in winter. Is this stable enough?"
Clay expands and contracts, which cracks rendered block walls. Corten has a slight flexibility that allows it to handle that ground movement without failing. However, the secret isn't just the steel; it's the prep. If you are retaining heavy clay, you must install a proper French drain (perforated pipe and gravel) behind the wall. Do that, and this wall isn't going anywhere.
5. "Do I need to seal or paint it to stop moss growing?"
Put the paintbrush away. Unlike rendered walls that turn green with algae, or decking that gets dangerously slippery with slime, Corten is inhospitable to moss and lichen. It heats up quickly in the sun and dries out fast. It is genuinely zero-maintenance. The only thing you need to do is keep leaves and other debris from piling up against the front face, so the steel can breathe.
6. "Will the metal get hot enough to scorch my plants?"
Steel conducts heat, and on a south-facing wall in July, it will get warm. However, soil is an incredible insulator. I’ve never seen it "cook" the roots of a plant. That said, if you plant delicate, water-loving leaves (like Hostas or Ferns) so they are physically touching the hot metal face, they might singe. My advice: Use trailing plants like creeping thyme or erigeron that love the warmth and are tough enough to drape over the edge.
7. "Is the top edge sharp? I have kids and a dog."
The panels come with a standard folded top edge which is relatively thin (35mm). This also adds significant rigidity to the wall, making it look much more substantial—like a piece of architecture rather than just a barrier.
8. "Can I drill into it to mount lights or a hose tap?"
This is one of the best things about Corten. If you want to put a light on a stone wall, you need a hammer drill, masonry plugs, and a lot of luck not to crack the face. With Corten, you just need a standard metal drill bit. You can easily mount deck lights, a hose reel, or even power sockets directly to the face. Just remember to use rubber grommets for any electrical cables to stop them chafing on the sharp metal edge.
9. "What happens if I whack it with the strimmer or lawnmower?"
If you hit a timber sleeper with a strimmer, you chew up the wood. If you hit a rendered wall, you chip the paint. If you hit Corten? You’ll probably break your strimmer line. The steel is harder than the plastic cord. If you do manage to scratch the surface with a metal lawnmower blade, don't worry. The bright silver scratch will rust over and blend back into the rest of the wall within a month. It is self-healing.
